Dear Pre-K Families,

The upper and lower case “Zz” was introduced this week.  We studied the sound the letter makes and thought of words that begin with the letter “Zz”.  The children made a “Ziggy Zebra” puppet as well.  The boys and girls now have a complete set of alphabet puppets!  We can’t believe we have completed the alphabet!  Over the next few weeks we will be reviewing what we have learned during this school year.  The next homework packet I send home will be a review packet for you to do with your child at your leisure.

Our class has one more entry to make in both their journal and their All About Me book.  Both of these books began in September.  Just wait until you see the progress your children have made as you read both their journal and All About Me book.

The boys and girls have completed their “Season Tree” chart, which was sent home.  Your children are excited to use this chart!  Next week we begin our unit on The Human Body.  Thank you for the books on this topic some of you are sending in.  We will be reading many books on this topic over the next few weeks.

Dear Pre-K Families,

The upper and lower case “Yy” was introduced this week.  We studied the sound the letter makes and thought of words that begin with the letter “Yy”.  The children made a “Yakky Yak” puppet.

We are almost finished with our “All About Me” book, which the children have been working on since September.  You will see this book all prepared for you at graduation!  It is a fantastic keepsake.

We continue to practice daily for our End Of The Year Show and Graduation Ceremony.  It is surely going to be a memorable performance.  Your children are very excited to perform for you!  Please remember to send in 8-10 pictures of your family by the end of this week so your child can make a very special prop we will use at our graduation ceremony.  I am still waiting for some pictures.

Your children have been working on a very special gift for all of their Moms.  They know that it is a surprise and the girls and boys are extremely excited to share their gift on Mother’s Day.

Shortly we will begin our unit on “The Human Body”.  Our class will learn about many important functions of the muscles, organs, tendons, joints, and bones of their body.  We will be spending a great deal of time on this and your children will be learning in depth about the various parts of the body.  Just wait until you see this!

We had a lot of fun today celebrating “Cinco de Mayo”.  In honor of this fun holiday, we had a special snack of tortilla chips and salsa.  Many of the children had never tried salsa before and they discovered they really enjoyed it!

Dear Families:

As we end March and head towards April, we will welcome George back from his vacation and wish Virat well on his upcoming vacation.

We will be working hard over the next few weeks to learn about Passover and Easter. We will read many stories about the holidays, dye Easter eggs, and taste matzoh. If you have not sent in your clean, empty milk or juice container, please do so as soon as possible. They will be transformed into bunny baskets.

Our recent weather has been extremely unpredictable. As long as the weather is warm and clear, we will play outside. If it is too cold or raining, we will move and sing inside to get our large muscles in shape. We will also continue to practice for our end of year show on May 31st.

With spring in full swing, we will be learning about caterpillars and butterflies. We will start an Eric Carle unit in order to learn about many different insects. Our classroom will soon receive caterpillars to watch as they grow and metamorphize. We will let you know when they arrive.

Flowers and ducks will abound as we jump into spring. We will read books such as Make Way for Ducklings, Angus and the Ducks, The Tiny Seed, and Planting a Rainbow.

Dear Pre-K Families,

The upper and lower case “Uu” was introduced this week.  We discussed the two sounds the letter “Uu” makes.  The children know that the letter “Uu” is a vowel as well.  Everyone made an “Ursula Umbrella” puppet and we made a list of “Uu” words.

We have continued our unit on “Weather”.  This week we spoke about volcanoes and earthquakes.  A map was used to show the girls and boys where this type of weather mostly takes place.  (Nice and far away!)  Each child created their own erupting volcano with red lava flowing over the soil!  The screams were so loud each and every time the red vinegar and baking soda reacted with each other, spurting up red lava!  All of us are hoping that spring like weather is not far away!  We have been reading about the way the weather changes in the spring as well as what the children can do outdoors, what starts to grow and how the animals come out of hibernation.

We are beginning a unit on Dinosaurs shortly.  Each child is creating their very own, very large dinosaur mural!  This is a work of art as well as a work in progress.  Our class is so excited to begin this unit!

Dear Families:

Happy Spring! Although Mother Nature has been teasing us with some spring like weather during the last few weeks, today marks the official start of spring. March is known for coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb; but this year, March’s weather seemed to have been unsure of itself. Here’s to hoping that April will be more familiar weather-wise.

This week, we will celebrate an important event for Red Robin. Miss Joanne’s class will be hosting the wedding of Q and U. The bride and groom have invited us to witness their nuptials on Wednesday. If you would like to have your child dress more formally on that day, you may do so.

In getting ready to celebrate the arrival of spring and Easter, we will be creating Easter Baskets out of cardboard juice or milk containers. As you finish these drinks, please rinse out the container and send it into school. We would like to have them sent in within the next two weeks.

It’s hard to believe that we are closer to the end of school than the beginning of school. We have learned so much and have lots more to learn. The children are starting to get ready for our end of year show. We are practicing walking on line, singing our songs, and learning the Pledge of Allegiance. They will be sure to put a smile on your faces that day.

Dear Parents,

            What can I say about the exquisite wedding on Wednesday?! It was PRICELESS! The nursery class celebrated the marriage of letters Q & U in a service complete with the wedding march, white aisle runner, paper bells, balloons, flowers, rose petals and champagne!!! Our class, representing other letters of the alphabet and students from Pre-K and Toddlers, were guests at a marriage ceremony guaranteed to last a lifetime. The union taught the children that the letters Q & U are hardly ever separated in the English language. The girls dressed in beautiful skirts and dresses, adorned flowered veils and wore wrist corsages. The boys were equally debonair and wore boutonnieres. Miss Sheryl and Mr. Joe were the officiate extraordinaire at Q & U’s wedding and both played their part as the Rabbi and Priest flawlessly. Joey, representing letter U, and Markela, representing letter Q were hands down, the CUTEST bride and groom! The petal-throwers aka Maya and Vihaan, worked together, and took their job very seriously scattering rose petals along the bridal path. Never underestimate the power of the buddy system! Their preciousness made all the guests smile. With minimal coaxing letters Q & U then repeated their vows, and promised to work together in words. Right on cue and next in the spotlight was our adorable ring-bearer, Marco. He was proud and confident carrying the pretty ring pillow and diamond. The gigantic smile told us how much our bride enjoyed her sparkling jewel!!!   Keeping the ceremony diverse, the traditional Jewish custom “breaking the glass” was implemented and on cue, Joey crushed the wine glass with his foot! Many believe that this custom represents hope for abundant happiness still others argue (and this is my favorite), that it’s the last time the groom gets to “put his foot down!” Following a popular African tradition called “Jumping the Broom,” the bride and groom once again obeyed and in unison quickly moved over it symbolizing the start of their life together. After the ceremony there were cheers of Mazel Tov and heartfelt congratulations! I almost cried but I think my adrenaline was pumping so much I just couldn’t!  The children then gathered for a wedding reception complete with dancing, wedding cupcakes, and plenty of champagne (apple juice)!!! Once the vows were exchanged and the reception was over, Q & U made a grand exit in their “little tyke’s cozy coupes”. The train of red solo cups and streamers trailing from the rear bumper made it even more memorable! It was quaint and quirky and we wished quadruple blessings on Q & U’s union. There is no question they will be happy together. Parents, because no wedding is complete without photographs, check us out on Facebook!!! A special thanks from Q & U for your thoughtful gifts and good wishes!!

            Throughout the week it was explained to the children that letter “Uu” is one of those letters that sometimes has the same sound as its name. Examples were given of words that start with the “long-u” sound, such as unicorn and the United States. Examples of “short-u” were also given such as umbrella and under. To further reinforce the letter, the children stamped umbrellas onto their pre-cut U-s and water colored some unique unicorns! We also had some super fun painting like Michelangelo! We taped large sheets of paper to the underside of the tables and gave the children a bunch of markers.

           They quickly fell in love with drawing in this unlikely art-making location! Each child was under the table for so long, we couldn’t wait to see what they created. Let’s just say….they were simple creations but the children sure were proud of them!!! We have a lot of budding artists in the nursery! It’s a great activity for students struggling with fine motor skills. It builds strength in their pincer grip. FUN FACT: Michelangelo spent FOUR years on his back painting the Sistine Chapel in Rome. FOUR years!!!! (The seed has been planted!!)

           In the up-coming weeks we will be welcoming spring into our classroom. We will learn about the changes taking place. We will also be focusing on Easter and Passover. Since Easter eggs and the Easter bunny symbolize fertility and new life, we will center our crafts on rabbits, chicks, baskets and colored eggs! Since the Passover Seder also celebrates new beginnings, we will make our own Seder plate and learn about the special foods we eat at the Seder table.

           With only five letters left to learn in our alphabet, this week we will spotlight the letter “Vv”. In math we will review all of our numbers and shapes.

           We cannot believe that it is nearly April! Thank you for your support throughout the year. We feel very lucky to have such a close partnership with all of our parents and continue to have SO much fun with your children!!

Dear Pre-K Families,

The letter “Ss” was introduced.  The children learned the sound the letter makes and thought of many words that begin with that letter.  They also made a “Scarecrow Puppet.”  All of the children practiced writing the upper and lower case “Ss”.  We also introduced the letter “Tt”.  All of the children made a “Tigger Puppet” and thought of many “Tt” words.

We have begun a unit on “Weather”.  This week we discussed and observed the different types of clouds.  We also read It Looked Like Spilt Milk, by Charles Shaw and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett.  Our class learned about “Cirrus” clouds, “Cumulus” clouds, “Stratus” clouds, and “Cumulonimbus” clouds.  We created an art project based on the story It Looked Like Spilt Milk.  The children had so much fun guessing what everyone’s clouds looked like.  We also will discuss and make a volcano!

We have been speaking about the magic of St. Patrick’s Day.  Each of the children made a Leprechaun and a pot of gold, which has been hanging on our door.  We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day Thursday and Friday.  Those naughty Leprechauns turned our room upside down!  Our milk was green and our water and bagels were green.  There were little green footprints on our ceiling and big and little green footprints were on our door.  Our garbage was upside down, toys were scattered everywhere and the room was just a mess!  They even left us a note that said, “Find Me”!  We went outside but none of us could catch him!

Lastly, we had a very special visitor- “Miss Tallulah T. Tuttle” came to see us on Wednesday, A.K.A Miss Sheryl!  She taught all of the children the proper “t party etiquette”.  The boys and girls were taught how to use their napkins properly.  They were also taught “pinky’s up” when eating or drinking and definitely no slurping when drinking.  She made delicious “T” cookies, which the girls and boys devoured.  All of us thoroughly enjoyed our special “guest”!

As you can see, we all had a lot of fun and excitement here at Red Robin!

Dear Parents,

Happy SPRING!!!   With cold air still pushing through and winter making an unwelcomed comeback this past Tuesday, Spring might take a while to fully win out!!!  We can’t wait to welcome those warm gentle breezes and strip off those heavy coats!

            The letter-sound association we learned last week was the letter “Tt.  What a fun letter!  Examples of words that start with that letter such as tiger, turtle and tulips were given.  A tea-riffic way to introduce “Tt” was with a tea party!  On Wednesday we sat down to a beautiful table with tiny china cups and flowery table accents and practiced our manners. The children learned the proper sitting position, courtesy and kindness. They also learned that the napkin goes on your lap and absolutely NO slurping! With pinkies in the air, they sipped tea and enjoyed a visit from Miss Tallulah T. Tuttles (aka Miss Sheryl) who brought smiles to all with her rousing rendition of “Tea for Two” and a tray of tasty T-shaped cookies! With widened eyes, the children eagerly demonstrated their newly acquired etiquette skills and shouted “Ta, Ta for now!” to Tallulah. A special thanks to Miss Sheryl who baked around 300 (peanut-free) cookies for the Red Robin children! She must have stirred that big wooden spoon until her arm hurt!  We appreciate her help in creating happy moments!!

            In order to strengthen speech skills and have some more FUN, we tried reciting some simple tongue twisters! Have a go at saying these out loud… “Irish wristwatch”, “Greek grapes”, “toy boat” and “quick kiss”. Most of the children were laughing too hard to say them! So….  “If you tell Tom to tell a tongue-twister his tongue will be twisted as tongue-twisters twist tongues!” It’s funny, if people REALLY knew how much fun teacher’s have by being around children everyone would want to be one!!!

            In the craft department we reinforced the letter “Tt” by decorating our pre-cut letters with triangles. We also explored the world of turtles and made some from paper bowls.

            Our group discussions this past week taught us about tornados! The force of a tornado can be a scary yet fascinating phenomenon for a child. Using our smart-board the children saw the tremendous destruction a tornado can cause and even learned a few safety tips.

            We also watched how the tornado snaked back and forth churning up the Kansas corn fields in a short clip from “The Wizard of Oz.” That video gave us an opportunity to discuss how we can protect ourselves in extreme weather. Ask your child what they would do if a tornado threatened their area. (Go to the basement. If you don’t have one, go to a room without windows such as a bathroom or closet.) We CONSTANTLY reiterate that weather events such as tornados are rare occurrences on Long Island.

            We have been selecting songs for the End-of-the-Year Show. (Say it isn’t so!!!!) The children are having so much fun putting a playlist together!  Their enthusiasm is so infectious!!! To keep you in the loop and SINGING, our letter “Tt” flip-chart song went like this….

            On Wednesday and Thursday we brought the magic of Ireland and the fun of St. Patrick’s Day into our Classroom. We used leprechauns, rainbows and pots of gold to spark the children’s imaginations! While they were out looking for him, Liam Leprechaun had a wee bit of bad luck playing in our classroom. He lost his shoes! We were NOT surprised because he left such a mess!!!! Liam did however leave a note, and promised us a treat if someone could just find his shoes. Naturally the children never gave up. The shoes were found and placed outside. Liam was most appreciative and as promised, left a bucket of sweet treats! I’m sure he noticed all the shamrocks we finger painted by mixing yellow and blue paint. It was more than a wee bit of fun. The children truly believe that those little green clad, pointy eared fellows exist! Now FINALLY I have someone to blame for those senior moments!!!  Throughout the day we played Irish music and read books on Irish folklore and fairy tales. It was all very magical.

This week we will learn to recognize the letter “Uu”.  On Wednesday we will celebrate a Royal Wedding as Letters Q & U join in Matrimony!  In order to fairly put a Wedding party together, this past Monday, we picked random names from a hat!  I am happy to share the results with you!  Our bride, representing letter “Q” will be Markela. Our groom, representing letter “U” will be Josef.  Marco will have the important role of “ring bearer”, and Vihaan and Cydni will be our petal throwers!!!  The rest of the class will represent all other letters of the alphabet and be among the guests at a marriage ceremony. Formal attire please!!
